22. Spiritualized-Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space

Spiritualized, sometimes stylized as Spiritualized®, are an English space rock band formed in 1990 in Rugby, Warwickshire by Jason Pierce (who often goes by the alias J. Spaceman) after the demise of his previous outfit, space-rockers Spacemen 3. The membership of Spiritualized has changed from album to album, with Pierce — who writes, composes and sings all of the band’s material — being the only constant member.

Spiritualized have released six studio albums. The best known and most critically acclaimed of these was 1997’s Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, which NME magazine made their Album of the Year.

Thoughts on Pixies
I actually really enjoyed Pixies. I’ve been meaning to listen to them long before I ever started this blog. I mean, everyone has heard ‘Where is My Mind?’, but it was nice to finally sit down and give an actual album a listen.
This album was recommended to me by pretty much everyone I know who likes Pixies as the album to start with and I really liked it. Is it okay to say there were moments when I was reminded of Pavement? Especially in ‘Hey’ which ended up being one of my favourite tracks. I mean, I like Pavement anyway so I make the comparison as a compliment.
Also can I just say Kim Deal is an amazing bassist? Just wow.
Altogether I really loved it and I’d love to check out more of their stuff. I’ve heard Surfer Rosa is the next album to go to…

21. Pixies-Doolittle

The Pixies are an American alternative rock band that formed in BostonMassachusetts in 1986. The group consists of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass guitar, vocals), and David Lovering (drums). While the Pixies found only modest success in their home country, they were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, although never achieving prolonged mainstream success with their studio albums. The group disbanded in 1993 in acrimonious circumstances but reunited in 2004.

The band’s style of music contains elements including indie rock and surf rock. Francis is the Pixies’ primary songwriter and singer who has been noted for his yowling delivery. He has typically written about offbeat subjects, such as extraterrestrials, surrealism and Biblical violence.

Thoughts on Talking Heads
I have to be honest when I say that I didn’t expect to like Talking Heads, mostly because when I first heard more than just “Burning Down the House” when I was in high school, I really didn’t care for it. But that was also a time before I listened to Radiohead and other good music, so it’s also not much of a surprise that I really loved Talking Heads when I gave them a solid try.
I liked them so much, in fact, that I gave Talking Heads: 77 a listen and was also really pleased with that. Both albums were great. There’s just something about the whole band’s sound that really meshes and I really like David Byrne’s voice. God knows what sort of reactions I’ll get for saying this, but there are moments when Talking Heads come off as a sort of cheerful Joy Division. It seems like an oxymoron and I think the comparison is solely in my head, but it’s there anyway.
The point is, I really liked Talking Heads and I will definitely be checking out the rest of their discography in the future.

Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in 1974 in New York City[1] and active until 1991. The band comprised David Byrne,Chris FrantzTina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison. Auxiliary musicians also regularly made appearances in concert and on the group’s albums.

The New Wave musical style of Talking Heads combined elements of punk rockavant-garde, pop, funkworld music and art rock. Frontman and songwriter David Byrne contributed whimsical, esoteric lyrics to the band’s songs, and emphasized their showmanship through various multimedia projects and performances. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes Talking Heads as being “one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the ’80s, while managing to earn several pop hits.”
